Two different products get called a hot tub cover. One is a fabric weather cover that goes over the top of the rigid cover you already have, protecting it from UV and standing water. The other is a custom-made tapered foam cover that replaces it and does the actual insulating.
The distinction matters because they are sold in completely different places, and because buying the first when you need the second leaves you with a tub still losing heat. So: if your existing cover is intact, protect it. If it is waterlogged, replace it, and a general marketplace cannot help you.

How a cover fails, and why it is predictable

- The sag breaks the seal against the tub rim.
- Heat starts leaving, and the electricity bill notices before you do.
Every step in that chain is slow, and every one is delayed by two cheap habits: keeping a UV protectant on the vinyl a few times a year, and stopping water from pooling on top. What a custom cover buys you

Measure before you order anything

Heat retention is the reason any of this matters
Most of the heat a hot tub loses leaves as evaporation off the water surface rather than through the shell. A safety point that is not about heat
A hot tub cover is also a barrier. A cover that no longer latches, or that a child could displace, has stopped doing a job that matters more than insulation. If yours has reached that point, replacement is not a budgeting decision. Keep the locking straps functional and replace broken clips promptly.
