Replace or Repair a Waterlogged Cover

Lift one end of the cover. If it is noticeably heavier than you remember and one half is heavier than the other, the foam core has taken on water and the cover has stopped insulating properly. That is the diagnosis in ten seconds, and everything else on this page follows from it.

Vinyl damaged, foam still dry

A small tear or a split seam, caught early, is worth patching. Marine vinyl repair tape or a proper vinyl patch kit closes the entry point and stops water reaching the foam, which is the only thing that actually matters here.

Do it now rather than at the weekend. The gap between a tear and a saturated core is measured in rain events, not months. Then condition the whole cover, because a cover that has torn once is usually a cover whose vinyl has been UV-degrading for a while — see cover conditioning and cleaning.

Foam saturated, vinyl mostly sound

This is the case where repair genuinely competes with replacement. Foam core replacements are sold as a pair of tapered inserts that go into your existing vinyl shell, and they typically cost meaningfully less than a whole new cover.

Two conditions have to hold. The vinyl shell must be sound enough to be worth keeping, including the seams and the hinge fold. And you have to be able to get the old foam out and the new foam in, which means unzipping the shell — not every cover is built to be reopened.

Check the zip before ordering. If the shell is stitched closed rather than zipped, the foam replacement route is not available to you and replacement is the answer.

Both gone

Cracked, chalky vinyl over saturated foam is a finished cover. Patching it treats one symptom of a general failure, and you will be back within a season. A cover in this state is also costing money continuously, because a sagging cover no longer seals against the rim.

Hardware failed, cover sound

Broken locking clips, a torn strap or a failed handle are cheap individual parts and worth replacing on their own. This is worth calling out because a cover whose clips have broken is a cover that no longer latches, and latching is a safety function, not a convenience one.

The arithmetic to run before deciding

A waterlogged cover is not a static cost. It has stopped insulating, so it is adding to your electricity bill every day it stays on the tub, and it is getting heavier, which puts strain on a lifter and eventually makes the tub annoying enough to use less.

Set the repair cost against the replacement cost, and then set both against the daily energy penalty for however long you would keep the repaired cover. A foam replacement that buys three years is a good deal. A patch on a failing cover that buys three months usually is not. Stopping it happening again

The failure chain is always the same: UV cracks the skin, water gets in, foam gains weight, seal fails. Interrupt it at step one and the cover lasts substantially longer.

• Condition the vinyl every few months, and pay attention to the fold line.
• Fit a cover cap to block UV and shed standing water.
• Do not let snow or leaves sit on it.
• Take the cover off when you shock, so by-products can off-gas.
• Patch small tears the day you find them.
