The Best Sundance Spa Filter Replacements

Sundance MicroClean is two filters, not one, and the inner element is meant to be binned rather than cleaned. Owners who soak everything have been soaking a disposable part for years.

Scores are our own, from the published scoring method on how we pick. They are an editorial judgment of published specifications, not a test result, and they are deliberately kept out of the page’s structured data.

The verdict, up front. A Sundance filter change is almost never one cartridge. MicroClean pairs a large pleated outer cartridge with a separate inner element, and the two do different jobs on different schedules.

The part that catches people out is the inner one. On the original MicroClean it is listed as a throwaway absorption filter — a consumable designed to be replaced, not cleaned. Plenty of diligent owners have been carefully soaking and reusing it for years, which is why their water never quite comes right.

So work out which generation you have and how many elements are in the housing before you order anything.

Which MicroClean do you have?

Read the number off the element you are removing. The prefix tells you the family:

  • 6540-series. The original MicroClean. Outer cartridge 6540-501, listed at 75 square feet. Inner element 6540-502, listed as a throwaway absorption filter.
  • 6473-series. MicroClean Ultra. Outer 6473-165, inner 6473-164, with 6473-453S used for the Ultra II inner. Sold together under set number 6541-397.
  • 6541-series. Appears as set numbers and on series-specific parts such as the 680 series pleated filter 6541-460S.

These families do not interchange. Ordering by the words “Sundance MicroClean” alone is how people end up with an element that will not seat, because that phrase appears on all of them.

The throwaway element, and why it matters

An absorption filter works differently from a pleated cartridge. A pleated cartridge strains particles out and you can rinse them back off it. An absorption element takes up material into its structure, and once it is loaded there is nothing to rinse away — the capacity is simply used up.

That is why it is sold as a throwaway part. It stops working long before it looks finished, there is no visual cue, and no amount of soaking restores it. If you cannot remember ever buying one, it is almost certainly the reason your Sundance filters better on paper than in the water.

This is the same class of trap as Jacuzzi’s ProClarity polishing filter and the two-part Eco-Pur systems on Master Spa tubs — multi-element filtration where one element is quietly doing nothing.

Buying the set, or buying the parts

Buy the set when both elements are due, which on most tubs is most of the time. It costs less than the two parts separately and it removes the decision.

Buy the outer cartridge alone when the pleats have collapsed or an end cap has separated but the inner element is recent. Buy the inner alone when the outer is genuinely in good condition and you are simply doing the consumable on schedule — that is the cheapest useful purchase on this page, and for many owners it is overdue.

The aftermarket Ultra set is the value option, and the only purchase here that covers both Ultra elements at once rather than one at a time — price it against an OEM outer plus an OEM inner, not against either on its own. The trade is ordinary aftermarket construction, and on a multi-element assembly a poor seal on one part undermines the other, so inspect the fit when you first install it.

A 75 square foot cartridge changes the schedule

The original MicroClean outer is listed at 75 square feet, which is large for a hot tub. More media means more surface before the pleats blind off, so these tubs genuinely go longer between cleans than a spa running a 25 or 35 square foot cartridge.

That is an argument for a two-filter rotation rather than against it. A cartridge this size holds a lot of water and takes a long time to dry properly, and a filter refitted damp is a filter that never fully recovers. Our cleaning guide covers the soak and filter cleaners covers what to soak it in.

Judge replacement on condition rather than a date — the signals are in when to replace a hot tub filter. The throwaway element is the exception: that one goes by schedule, because it gives you no signal at all.

Filtration is not sanitation

Worth restating on a page about premium multi-stage filtration. A filter removes particles; it does not disinfect. Hot tub guidance is built on holding a measurable residual at a controlled pH — pH 7.2 to 7.8 with at least 3 ppm free chlorine, or 4 to 8 ppm bromine.[source]

What a complete, clean MicroClean assembly buys you is sanitizer spent on dissolved load rather than on suspended dirt. On a tub running one fresh element and one exhausted one, that difference shows up in how much you dose.

On prices, and on what these scores are

Sundance parts sit at the expensive end of hot tub filtration, particularly OEM sets, with the aftermarket Ultra pair well below them and the throwaway inner element cheapest of all. Every button reads the live price where our price layer has one; anything we cannot verify, we do not print — the reasoning is on how we pick.

The scores are an editorial judgment of published fit information, whether a purchase covers the whole assembly, construction and price, against our published method. We have not tested these filters, we make no performance claims on their behalf, and there is no rating markup in this page’s structured data.

The honest summary

Open the housing and count. Two elements means two purchases, and the set is usually the cheaper way to make them. Read the prefix on the part number to tell original MicroClean from Ultra, because the phrase on the box is the same either way.

And if you have owned a Sundance for a few years and have never bought a 6540-502, buy one now. It is the cheapest item on this page and the most likely to change how your water looks.

Sundance MicroClean filter set, 6540-501 and 6540-502

#1 · Best for replacing the whole system at once

Sundance MicroClean filter set, 6540-501 and 6540-502

Sundance · scored 8.3/10

Both MicroClean elements in one purchase, which is what a full filter change on these tubs actually means.

Buying the set is the point. Sundance MicroClean runs a pleated outer cartridge and a separate inner element, and replacing one without the other leaves half the filtration as old as it ever was. The set removes that decision.

It is the largest single outlay on this page, and if your inner element is only a few months old you are replacing something that still works. Check the condition of both before defaulting to the set.

Chryseos MicroClean Ultra set, 6473-165 and 6473-164

#2 · Best for the ultra pair in one purchase

Chryseos MicroClean Ultra set, 6473-165 and 6473-164

Chryseos · scored 8.1/10

Both Ultra elements together, with an unusually complete set of part numbers and the series years printed on the listing.

This listing does the useful thing of naming both halves of the Ultra pair, the set number they replace, the series and the model years, plus Filbur and Baleen equivalents. That is enough to check against what came out of your housing before committing, which is more than most aftermarket spa filter listings give you.

Be precise about the value, because it is not a straight undercut: this is the only entry here that covers both Ultra elements in one purchase, where the OEM parts are sold singly. Price it against buying an OEM outer and an OEM inner separately, not against one of them. Standard aftermarket caveats apply too. End caps are where these fail, the manufacturer names are stated for reference rather than as an endorsement, and on a multi-element system a poor seal on one part undoes the other.

Sundance 6540-501 MicroClean cartridge, 75 sq ft

#3 · Best for the outer cartridge on its own

Sundance 6540-501 MicroClean cartridge, 75 sq ft

Sundance · scored 7.7/10

The reusable pleated half of the MicroClean pair, at 75 square feet.

At 75 square feet this is a large cartridge by hot tub standards, which is part of why Sundance tubs go a long time between cleans. It is the element you rinse and soak on a schedule rather than throw away.

On its own it is only half a filter change. Order it alone when the pleated cartridge has failed and the inner element is still recent, and order the set otherwise.

Sundance 6540-502 MicroClean I throwaway element

#4 · Best for the element you are meant to bin

Sundance 6540-502 MicroClean I throwaway element

Sundance · scored 7.6/10

A deliberately disposable absorption element, and the part Sundance owners most often forget exists.

The listing calls it a throwaway absorption filter, and that wording matters. This is the one element in the assembly that is not meant to be cleaned and reused, so an owner who has been diligently soaking everything for three years has been soaking something designed to be replaced.

Because it is absorptive rather than purely pleated, it stops working long before it looks finished. If you cannot remember buying one, that is your answer.

Sundance MicroClean Ultra II inner filter, 6473-453S

#5 · Best for microclean ultra ii tubs

Sundance MicroClean Ultra II inner filter, 6473-453S

Sundance · scored 7.4/10

The inner element for the Ultra II generation, which uses different numbers from the original MicroClean.

Sundance has run several MicroClean generations and the Ultra parts carry 6473 numbers rather than 6540 ones. If the number on your old element starts 6473, this family is yours and the original MicroClean set is not.

As with every inner element here, this is half a job on its own, and it is expensive for a single component. Read the number off the part rather than ordering by the words MicroClean alone, which appear on all of them.

Questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

How many filters does a Sundance spa use?

MicroClean tubs use two elements: a large pleated outer cartridge and a separate inner element. A full filter change means both. Count what comes out of the housing before ordering, because replacing only one leaves half the filtration as old as it ever was.

Can you clean a Sundance MicroClean filter?

The outer pleated cartridge, yes: rinse it regularly and soak it chemically on a schedule. The inner element on the original MicroClean is listed as a throwaway absorption filter and is designed to be replaced rather than cleaned. Soaking it does not restore it.

What is the difference between MicroClean and MicroClean Ultra?

They are different generations with different part numbers and they do not interchange. Original MicroClean uses 6540-series parts such as 6540-501 and 6540-502; Ultra uses 6473-series parts such as 6473-165 and 6473-164, sold together under set number 6541-397.

What does the Sundance 6540-502 filter do?

It is the inner absorption element of the original MicroClean system. Unlike a pleated cartridge it takes material up into its structure rather than straining it out, so its capacity is used up rather than rinsed off. Its listing describes it as a throwaway filter.

Are aftermarket Sundance filters any good?

The better listings print both part numbers in the set, which lets you verify fit before buying, and they cost substantially less than OEM. The weak point is ordinary aftermarket construction at the end caps, and on a two-element assembly a poor seal on one part undermines the other, so check the fit on installation.
