The Best Master Spa Filter Replacements

Master Spa is the brand people order the wrong filter for, because the ranges use different shapes and the part numbers all look alike. Get the number off the old cartridge first, then this page is short.

Scores are our own, from the published scoring method on how we pick. They are an editorial judgment of published specifications, not a test result, and they are deliberately kept out of the page’s structured data.

The verdict, up front. There is no single “Master Spa filter.” The brand has used at least three physically different cartridge shapes across its ranges, and two of its systems take two filters rather than one. Almost every wrong order in this category comes from buying by tub brand instead of by part number.

So the honest version of this page is a matching exercise first and a shopping list second. Read the number printed on the cartridge you are taking out, measure its length and the holes at each end, and then pick the listing below whose stated numbers match yours. If the old filter is long gone, the measuring section below gets you there with a tape.

How we judged these

CriterionWhy it mattersWhat we looked at
Cross-reference clarityThe single best predictor of a correct order. A listing that prints its Pleatco, Unicel, Filbur and OEM equivalents can be checked against your old filter before you buy.Which part numbers the listing actually states
Fit certaintyLength, diameter and end-hole size decide whether a cartridge seats. A filter that does not seat lets water bypass the pleats entirely, which is worse than a dirty filter.Published dimensions, and how specific they are

Work out which shape your tub takes

This is the whole job. Master Spa cartridges divide into three families and they are not interchangeable in any direction:

  • Open-ended drop-in. A cartridge with an open hole at both ends that drops into the housing. The current Eco-Pur shape is this type, roughly 6 3/4 inches long and 8 inches across with 4 1/16 inch openings.
  • Threaded with a handle. Used on the Legacy and Freedom ranges. It screws into a 2 inch threaded fitting at the base and has a carry handle molded into the top. Physically nothing like the drop-in type.
  • Small inner element. Around 7 inches long and only 3 7/8 inches across, in the PMA10 pattern. On the tubs that use one, it sits alongside a larger outer filter rather than replacing it.

If you still have the old cartridge, this takes ten seconds: a handle and a screw thread means the Legacy and Freedom part, an 8 inch diameter with open ends means the current Eco-Pur shape, and anything under 4 inches across is the small inner element. If you do not, lift the filter lid and measure the housing before ordering anything.

The two-filter trap

Eco-Pur systems introduced from 2007 onward often run an outer cartridge and a separate inner element together. This catches people out for an obvious reason: they buy one filter, fit it, and the tub still never quite clears, because half the filtration in the housing is several years old and blinded off.

Before you order, take the whole assembly out and count what is in it. If there are two elements, both need replacing on the same schedule. This is also the most common reason a Master Spa owner concludes that aftermarket filters “do not work” — the new one is fine, and the one they did not replace is the problem.

OEM part numbers, and why they multiply

Master Spa parts carry X-numbers: X268330, X238330, X268325, X268370, X268380 and others, and several of them refer to the same physical cartridge sold at different times or in different packs. The aftermarket then adds its own naming on top — Pleatco PMA-something, Unicel C-something, Filbur FC-something — so one filter can legitimately carry six numbers.

That is why cross-reference clarity is our first criterion rather than build quality. A well-made cartridge in the wrong shape is worthless, and the only defense against the wrong shape is a listing that prints the whole chain of equivalents so you can find your number in it. Every pick below does, which is a large part of why they are the picks.

OEM or aftermarket?

The cartridges on this page are aftermarket, which is why they cost meaningfully less than the dealer parts. That is a reasonable trade for most owners: a filter is a consumable, and a cheaper one that actually gets changed on schedule beats an expensive one stretched to eighteen months.

There are two honest caveats. Aftermarket end caps are generally the first thing to go, so inspect the cap-to-media bond each time you clean one. And an independent test standard is rare here — only one pick below cites testing to NSF 50 protocols, which is worth something in a category where almost everything else is sold on adjectives.

Filtration is not sanitation

Worth stating plainly, because filter pages attract the belief that a better cartridge means less chemistry. A filter removes particles. It does not disinfect, and public health guidance for hot tubs is built around holding a measurable sanitizer residual at a controlled pH.[source] The targets are pH 7.2 to 7.8 with at least 3 ppm free chlorine, or 4 to 8 ppm bromine, whatever cartridge is fitted.[source]

What a clean, correctly fitted filter does is let the sanitizer work on dissolved load instead of suspended dirt. That is real, and it is a different claim.

How often to change them

Clean on a schedule, replace on condition. A rinse every couple of weeks and a proper chemical soak every few months keeps a cartridge working; our guide to cleaning a filter covers the soak, and filter cleaners covers what to soak it in.

Replace when the pleats stay grey after a soak, when the media feels stiff, or when the end cap has started to separate. On a tub that takes two elements, replace both at once. The full picture is in when to replace a hot tub filter, and if you run a two-filter rotation, the cadence changes again — which is one argument for buying the multi-packs on this page.

On prices, and on what these scores are

Master Spa replacements run from inexpensive for a small inner element to mid-range for a current Eco-Pur cartridge, and the multi-packs are where the per-filter cost improves. Every button reads the live price where our price layer has one; anything we cannot verify, we do not print — the reasoning is on how we pick.

The scores are an editorial judgment of published cross-references, stated dimensions, construction detail and pack economics, against our published method. We have not tested these cartridges, we make no performance claims on their behalf, and there is no rating markup in this page’s structured data.

The honest summary

For most current Master Spas, the drop-in Eco-Pur cartridge is the part, and its listing prints enough cross-references to check before you buy. If your filter screws in and has a handle, you have a Legacy or Freedom and you need the threaded one instead. If the housing contains two elements, buy both. And if you are not sure which of those you have, the tape measure answers it faster than any part number search will.

The general version of this problem — matching any cartridge to any tub — is what our hot tub filter finder is for.

Spa-Daddy SD-00380, Eco-Pur current style

#1 · Best for most current master spas

Spa-Daddy SD-00380, Eco-Pur current style

Spa-Daddy · scored 8.3/10

The cartridge most recent Eco-Pur tubs take, with its cross-references printed on the listing.

Master Spa filters are unusually easy to get wrong because the brand has used several shapes across its ranges, and the OEM part numbers look alike. What makes this listing useful is that it prints the whole chain: the Pleatco, Filbur and Unicel equivalents plus a list of Master Spa X-numbers. Match one of those against the number on your old cartridge and you are done.

Measure before ordering anyway. The listed 6 3/4 inch length with open 4 1/16 inch ends is the current Eco-Pur shape; a tub with a threaded or handled filter is on a different part entirely. Note this is an aftermarket cartridge rather than a Master Spa one, which is why it costs less than the dealer part.

Spa-Daddy SD-01407, Legacy and Freedom one-piece

#2 · Best for legacy and freedom series tubs

Spa-Daddy SD-01407, Legacy and Freedom one-piece

Spa-Daddy · scored 8.3/10

The one-piece threaded version, for the Master Spa ranges that screw the filter in rather than drop it.

This is the part that confuses people who own a Legacy or Freedom. The filter screws into the housing on a 2 inch threaded base and has a handle on top, so it is physically nothing like the open-ended cartridge the newer tubs use. If you have been sent an open-ended filter and it spins uselessly in the housing, this is the shape you actually wanted.

The threaded base is also the weak point of any filter built this way. Hand-tighten it and no more — cross-threading the housing on a spa is a much more expensive problem than a filter.

Tier1 PMA10 cartridge, 2-pack

#3 · Best for the small inner element

Tier1 PMA10 cartridge, 2-pack

Tier1 · scored 8.4/10

The smaller PMA10-pattern cartridge, tested to NSF 50 protocols according to its listing.

An independent test standard is rare in this category, and this listing cites testing to NSF 50 protocols. That is worth something when almost every other cartridge is sold on adjectives. The trilobal fiber claim is the maker's own; treat the stated percentage improvements in this category as marketing rather than measurement.

The thing to get right is size. At 7 inches by 3 7/8 this is a narrow cartridge, and it is easy to order it when you needed the 8 inch diameter part. Read the number off your old filter rather than the tub badge.

ClearChoice Eco-Pur outer filter, 2-pack

#4 · Best for the outer half of a two-part system

ClearChoice Eco-Pur outer filter, 2-pack

Clear Choice · scored 7.9/10

Eco-Pur systems from 2007 on use two filters. This is the outer one, which people forget exists.

The single most useful thing to know about Master Spa's Eco-Pur filtration is that it is often a two-part arrangement: an outer cartridge and a separate inner element. Owners who only ever buy one part end up with a tub that never quite clears, because half the filtration is years old.

Check what your housing actually contains before ordering. The listing scopes this to Eco-Pur systems introduced in 2007 and later, so an older tub may take something else entirely. Buying the two-pack means the spare is already on the shelf when the next change comes round.

Questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

What filter does a Master Spa use?

It depends on the range and the year. Current Eco-Pur tubs take an open-ended cartridge around 6 3/4 inches long and 8 inches across; Legacy and Freedom tubs take a threaded one-piece filter with a handle on top; and some systems run a small PMA10-pattern inner element alongside a larger outer filter. Read the number off the old cartridge rather than ordering by tub brand.

Do Master Spa tubs use two filters?

Many Eco-Pur systems from 2007 onward do: an outer cartridge plus a separate inner element. Take the assembly out and count the elements before ordering. Replacing only one is the most common reason a tub stays cloudy after a filter change.

Are aftermarket Master Spa filters any good?

Generally yes, and they cost substantially less than dealer parts, which in practice means they get changed on schedule. The weak point is the bond between end cap and media, so check it when you clean one. Getting the shape right matters far more than OEM versus aftermarket.

What does the Master Spa X268330 filter cross-reference to?

Listings for the current Eco-Pur shape state equivalence to Pleatco PMA45-2004-R, Filbur FC-1007 and Unicel C-8341, alongside Master Spa numbers including X268330, X238330 and X268325. Check the number on your own cartridge against the listing rather than assuming, since Master Spa has reused similar numbers across shapes.

How often should a Master Spa filter be replaced?

Rinse every couple of weeks, soak chemically every few months, and replace when the pleats stay discolored after a soak or the end cap starts to separate. Condition beats calendar, and on a two-element system both parts get replaced together.
