The Best Softub Filter Replacements
One date decides this entire purchase. Tubs built from July 2009 take the 5020; earlier ones take the 5015. Search results overwhelmingly return the newer part, which is why older Softub owners keep being sent the wrong filter.

Scores are our own, from the published scoring method on how we pick. They are an editorial judgment of published specifications, not a test result, and they are deliberately kept out of the page’s structured data.
The verdict, up front. Softub filter buying comes down to one question: was your tub built before or after July 2009?
- July 2009 and later — part 5020, also carrying the number 8553, listed at 35 square feet and covering the T-140, T-220 and T-300 models.
- Before July 2009 — part 5015, a different cartridge that the newer one will not substitute for.
Search for “Softub filter” and nearly everything returned is the 5020, because that is the larger market. Owners of older tubs order what comes up first, find it does not fit, and conclude the listing was wrong. It was not — it was for the other half of the fleet.
How we judged these
| Criterion | Why it matters | What we looked at |
|---|---|---|
| Fit certainty | On Softub this is a date, not a dimension. A listing that states the July 2009 cutoff is worth more than one that says Softub. | Whether the cutoff and model numbers are stated |
| Cross-reference clarity | The 5020 also appears as 8553, and aftermarket makers use their own numbers such as 60305M. | Which equivalent numbers the listing prints |
| Build quality | A small cartridge in a hard-working motor pack gets handled often, so end caps and the snap fitting matter. | Maker and construction detail |
| Value | At 35 square feet these load up quickly, so cost per filter across a multi-pack is the number that counts. | Pack size against live price |
| Availability | The 5020 is widely stocked; the older 5015 is a thinner market and worth buying a spare of when you see one. | Whether the part is reliably stocked |
Finding out which side of 2009 you are on
The reliable answer is the number on the cartridge you are removing. If it is gone or illegible, work from the tub instead: Softub’s model designations on the current filter listings are T-140, T-220 and T-300, so a tub badged with one of those is on the later part.
If your Softub predates that naming, or you bought it second-hand with no paperwork, buy one 5015 and one 5020 rather than guessing twice. These are inexpensive cartridges and the shipping on a wrong-part return will cost more than the spare.
Why a Softub filter is different
Softub is a soft-sided tub with its pump, heater and filter in a separate motor pack rather than in a cabinet around the shell. That has two practical consequences for filtration.
First, the cartridge is small. At 35 square feet it is around half the media of a mid-size hard-shell spa filter and a fraction of the 75 square foot elements used by brands like Sundance. Less media means it loads up faster, so the cleaning and replacement interval is genuinely shorter — this is not a filter you inspect twice a year.
Second, the motor pack is where the heat is. A blinded filter restricts flow, and restricted flow through a compact heater arrangement is worth avoiding for reasons beyond water clarity. If your Softub is cutting out or struggling to hold temperature, the filter is the first thing to check, not the last.
Small filter, faster rhythm
- Rinse weekly rather than fortnightly. A 35 square foot cartridge does not have the reserve that a big one does.
- Soak chemically every few weeks, not every few months. The method is in how to clean a hot tub filter and the products in the best filter cleaners.
- Own two. A two-filter rotation matters more on small cartridges than large ones, because you are taking the filter out more often and a damp filter refitted immediately never fully recovers.
- Replace on condition. Pleats that stay grey after a soak, stiff media, or a separating end cap — the signals are in when to replace a hot tub filter.
On the antibacterial claim
Softub cartridges are sometimes described as antibacterial, though no listing on this page currently carries the description. Treat it as a manufacturer claim rather than a verified property wherever you meet it: we have not seen a test behind it and we are not going to imply one exists.
More importantly, an antibacterial treatment on filter media is not a sanitizer and changes nothing about what you hold in the water. Hot tub guidance is built on a measurable residual at a controlled pH — pH 7.2 to 7.8 with at least 3 ppm free chlorine, or 4 to 8 ppm bromine.[source] A Softub’s small water volume actually makes that discipline more important, not less, because a smaller body of water swings faster with bather load.
OEM or aftermarket?
Everything on this page except the Darlly cartridge is aftermarket, and for a consumable at this price that is a reasonable default. The best of these listings are more informative than the generic ones, stating the month of the cutoff, the T-series models and the filtration area.
Darlly is a long-established cartridge manufacturer rather than a relabeler, which is worth something if you would rather buy a known filter brand. The honest counterweight is that we have no published evidence it filters differently, and it costs more than the generic equivalents.
On prices, and on what these scores are
Softub cartridges are inexpensive individually and add up because you change them often. The older 5015 costs more and is stocked less reliably, which is a market effect rather than a quality one. Every button reads the live price where our price layer has one; anything we cannot verify, we do not print — the reasoning is on how we pick.
The scores are an editorial judgment of published fit information, stated cross-references, construction and pack economics, against our published method. We have not tested these filters, we make no performance claims on their behalf, and there is no rating markup in this page’s structured data.
The honest summary
Establish the date first. From July 2009 onward you want the 5020, and the listings that name the T-140, T-220 and T-300 models give you the most confidence you are looking at the right one. Before that, you want the 5015, and it is worth buying a spare while you can see one in stock.
Then adjust your expectations on interval. A 35 square foot cartridge in a hard-working motor pack is a faster consumable than a hard-shell spa’s filter, and owning two is the cheapest way to make that manageable.

#1 · Best for matching your softub model letter
Chryseos Softub 5020 filter, 35 sq ft
Chryseos · scored 8.4/10
Names the T-140, T-220 and T-300 models and the 35 square foot area, which is more than most Softub listings state.
The most specific Softub listing we found: it gives the month of the cutoff, the three model designations and the filtration area. On a brand where the whole purchase hinges on a date, that specificity is worth more than a brand name.
It is an aftermarket cartridge and priced like one, so expect ordinary aftermarket end caps rather than anything special. The value per filter is among the best here.

#2 · Best for post-2009 softubs
Softub 5020 / 8553 replacement filter, 2009 and newer
Generic · scored 8.1/10
The current Softub pattern, with the 2009 cutoff stated plainly on the listing.
Softub filter buying comes down to one question and this listing answers it on the front: is your tub from 2009 or later? If yes, the 5020 is your part and the 8553 number refers to the same element.
It is a single cartridge, and on a tub where the filter sits in the motor pack you will be changing it often enough that a multi-pack usually works out better. Buy one to confirm fit, then buy in twos.

#3 · Best for running a rotation
Softub 5020 filter, 2-pack, 35 sq ft
Generic · scored 8.0/10
Two of the current Softub element, which is what makes rotating a clean filter in practical.
A 35 square foot cartridge is small, and a small filter in a heavily used tub loads up quickly. Two elements let you fit a clean one immediately and let the other dry completely, which matters more on small filters than on large ones.
Per filter it is not the cheapest option here, and buying two of the wrong part is worse than buying one. Confirm the 2009 cutoff applies to your tub with a single filter before committing to a pair.

#4 · Best for a named-brand alternative
Darlly Softub snap-on filter, 2009 and later
Darlly · scored 7.5/10
A Darlly-branded version of the post-2009 snap-on filter, from an established cartridge maker.
Darlly is a long-established cartridge manufacturer rather than a relabeler, and the snap-on description matches how the post-2009 Softub element mounts. If you want a known filter brand rather than a generic, this is the one here.
The listing prints no equivalent part number, which matters more on this tub than on most: the 5020 also appears as 8553, and aftermarket makers add their own codes. The only cross-checks this listing gives you are the stated 2009 cutoff and the snap-on fitting, so confirm both against the element you pull out.

#5 · Best for older softubs
Clarathon 5015 filter, pre-2009 Softub
Clarathon · scored 7.9/10
The other side of the 2009 split, and the part older Softub owners keep being sent the wrong version of.
If you own an older Softub and a filter you ordered did not fit, this is almost certainly why. The 5015 and the 5020 are not interchangeable and search results for Softub filter overwhelmingly return the newer one.
Older-pattern parts are always the thinner end of the market, so it costs more than the current filter and stock is less reliable. Worth buying a spare when you see one available.

Questions people actually ask
Frequently asked questions
What filter does a Softub use?
Tubs built from July 2009 onward use part 5020, which also carries the number 8553 and is listed at 35 square feet for the T-140, T-220 and T-300 models. Tubs built before that date use part 5015. The two are not interchangeable.
What is the difference between a Softub 5015 and 5020 filter?
They are the pre-2009 and post-2009 cartridges respectively. Softub changed the filter in July 2009 and the older part was not carried over. Because most listings and search results return the 5020, owners of older tubs frequently receive the wrong one.
How often should you change a Softub filter?
More often than a hard-shell spa filter. At 35 square feet there is much less media in reserve, so rinse weekly, soak chemically every few weeks, and replace on condition rather than on a date. Owning two and rotating them extends the life of both.
Can a dirty filter stop a Softub heating?
A blinded filter restricts flow, and the pump, heater and filter all sit together in the Softub motor pack. If your tub is struggling to hold temperature or cutting out, check the filter before assuming a heater fault.
Are antibacterial Softub filters worth it?
Treat the antibacterial description as a manufacturer claim we have not verified. Even taken at face value, a treated filter medium is not a sanitizer and does not change the residual you need to hold in the water. Buy on fit, build and price instead. The antibacterial cartridge we used to list here is no longer available, and we have not substituted another on the strength of that description alone.
