The Best Caldera Spa Filter Replacements
The number in a Caldera filter name is its square footage, not a series or a year. Get that wrong and you order a filter that physically will not seat, which is the single most common Caldera mistake.

Scores are our own, from the published scoring method on how we pick. They are an editorial judgment of published specifications, not a test result, and they are deliberately kept out of the page’s structured data.
The verdict, up front. Caldera names its filters by filtration area: Caldera 50, Caldera 75, Caldera 100. Those numbers are square feet of media, not model years and not series names, and that single fact resolves most wrong orders in this category.
A Caldera 75 is not a newer Caldera 50. It is a physically different, larger element for a different housing. You cannot upgrade your way to better filtration by buying a bigger number — it will not fit, and a cartridge that does not seat lets water bypass the pleats entirely.
So read the number off the element you are removing, or measure the housing. Then match a listing that prints your number.
How we judged these
| Criterion | Why it matters | What we looked at |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-reference clarity | The best predictor of a correct order. A listing printing its Unicel, Pleatco and Filbur equivalents can be checked against your old element before you buy. | Which part numbers the listing actually states |
| Fit certainty | On Caldera this means the size number and, for Utopia tubs, the model years. Utopia spans more than one filter size. | Whether size and model years are stated |
| Build quality | End caps and the bond to the media are where pleated cartridges fail, usually during a clean. | Construction detail, OEM versus aftermarket |
| Value | Caldera patterns are well served by the aftermarket, so prices vary widely for the same element. | Live price against stated filtration area |
| Availability | The 50 is stocked everywhere; the 75 and 100 less so. A second source matters for the rarer sizes. | Whether the size is reliably in stock |
Working out which size you need
The part number on the old cartridge is the fastest route. Failing that, the cross-reference families line up like this, all as printed on the listings:
| Caldera size | Caldera numbers | Unicel | Pleatco | Filbur |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caldera 50 | 1019401, 73532 | C-7350 | PCD50N | FC-3963 |
| Caldera 75 | 1019301 | C-7375 | PCD75N | FC-3964 |
| Caldera 100 | 73722, 1039607 | C-8399 | PCD100W | FC-3965 |
Find any one of your numbers in that table and you have your size. If your element carries none of them, measure it and use the filter finder instead — Caldera has used other parts over the years and this table covers the three common ones.
The Utopia complication
Utopia is a long-running Caldera range and it did not use one filter throughout. The listings reflect that: one names Utopia specifically for 2003 to 2004 against the 75 size, while the 100 size is also sold as a Caldera Utopia part.
So “I have a Utopia” is not enough information to order from. You need the model year or, better, the number off the cartridge. A listing that states years is more trustworthy than one that just says Utopia, which is why we rank the year-specific one above a generic equivalent.
The Watkins overlap worth knowing
Caldera and Hot Spring both sit under Watkins, and their parts bins overlap. One OEM cartridge on this page is listed as fitting Hot Spring, Hot Spot, Solana and Caldera spas — four brand names, one part number.
The practical value of knowing this is search. If your Caldera element is out of stock under Caldera listings, the same part may be sitting available under a Hot Spring or Solana heading. It also explains why cross-references sometimes lead you into Hot Spring filter territory when you were shopping for a Caldera.
Do not over-read it. This applies to specific part numbers and the models a listing names, not to the brands as a whole, and plenty of Caldera tubs take the numbered 50, 75 or 100 elements that no Hot Spring uses. Verify against your own cartridge either way.
What the square footage actually buys
More media area means more surface before the pleats blind off, so a Caldera 100 runs longer between cleans than a Caldera 50 in the same conditions. It does not mean finer filtration, and it is not a quality ranking — it is sized to the pump and the tub volume it was designed for.
Its genuinely useful role is as a cross-check. If your tub’s element is 75 square feet and the listing in front of you says 50, you are looking at the wrong part regardless of what the title says about Caldera.
Cleaning and replacement
Rinse every couple of weeks, soak chemically every few months, replace on condition rather than on a date. The method is in how to clean a hot tub filter and the products in the best filter cleaners.
Caldera cartridges are inexpensive enough that a two-filter rotation is realistic here in a way it is not on brands with dealer-only pricing. Swapping a clean element in while the other dries fully is the single biggest change most owners can make to how long each one lasts. Replace when the pleats stay grey after a soak or an end cap starts to separate — the signals are in when to replace a hot tub filter.
Filtration is not sanitation
A filter removes particles; it does not disinfect. Hot tub guidance is built around holding a measurable residual at a controlled pH — pH 7.2 to 7.8 with at least 3 ppm free chlorine, or 4 to 8 ppm bromine.[source] A larger cartridge does not move those numbers.
On prices, and on what these scores are
Caldera filters are mid-priced by hot tub standards and the aftermarket competes hard on the 50 size in particular, so the spread between equivalent cartridges is wide. Every button reads the live price where our price layer has one; anything we cannot verify, we do not print — the reasoning is on how we pick.
The scores are an editorial judgment of published cross-references, stated sizes and model years, construction and price, against our published method. We have not tested these cartridges, we make no performance claims on their behalf, and there is no rating markup in this page’s structured data.
The honest summary
Read the number off the element, match it in the table above, and buy the listing that prints your number. The 50 is the most common size and the best served by the aftermarket, so it is also the cheapest to run a rotation on.
If you have a Utopia, find the model year before ordering. And if your size is out of stock everywhere, try searching the Watkins part number under Hot Spring or Solana — it is the same parts bin.

The picks in detail
Specifications below are the manufacturer’s own published figures, attributed as such. We have not tested these units and the scores are an editorial judgment of published data against the published method, not a test result.

#1 · Best for caldera 50 housings
Chryseos C-7350 filter, Caldera 50
Chryseos · scored 8.5/10
The 50 square foot Caldera pattern with a full cross-reference chain printed on the listing.
The listing prints Unicel, Pleatco and Filbur equivalents alongside the Caldera part numbers, which is exactly what you need to confirm fit before ordering rather than after. It is also the cheapest way onto the correct Caldera pattern.
The thing to understand about Caldera naming is that 50 is the square footage, not a series or a year. A Caldera 50 filter and a Caldera 75 filter are different sizes of element, so read the number off your cartridge rather than your tub badge.

Skip this one if: your tub takes the 75 or 100 size. The Caldera number is the filtration area, not a model year.

#2 · Best for larger utopia tubs
Wowreed 73722 filter, Caldera 100 Utopia
Wowreed · scored 8.0/10
The 100 square foot Caldera element, for the bigger Utopia housings.
The largest of the three Caldera sizes and the one the bigger Utopia tubs take. As with the others, the listing carries the Unicel, Filbur and Pleatco equivalents so you can verify against your old element.
A larger filtration area is set by the tub, not chosen by you. Do not buy the 100 hoping for better filtration in a housing built for the 50, because it will not fit and a filter that does not seat properly filters nothing.

#3 · Best for caldera 75 and some utopia tubs
Chryseos C-7375 filter, Caldera 75
Chryseos · scored 8.1/10
The 75 square foot size, with the Utopia model years the listing actually names.
Useful because it states model years rather than just a model name. Utopia is a long-running Caldera range and it did not use one filter throughout, so a listing that says 2003 to 2004 is telling you something a generic Utopia listing is not.
That specificity cuts both ways: if your Utopia is newer, this is probably the wrong element and the 100 size is worth checking. Measure or read the part number before ordering.

#5 · Best for a second source for the 50
POOLPURE C-7350 filter, Caldera 50
POOLPURE · scored 7.7/10
The same Caldera 50 pattern from a different seller, worth knowing when the cheaper one is out.
A filter is only useful if you can get one, so a second supplier for the most common Caldera size earns a place here. POOLPURE cartridges turn up widely across spa filter patterns.
Its listing carries fewer cross-references than the pick above it, which matters in a category where verifying the number is the whole job. On price and stock they are interchangeable; on published information they are not.

Questions people actually ask
Frequently asked questions
What does the number in a Caldera filter mean?
It is the filtration area in square feet. Caldera 50, 75 and 100 are three different sizes of element for different housings, not model years or trim levels. A larger number is not an upgrade and will not fit a smaller housing.
What filter does a Caldera Utopia use?
It depends on the year. Listings scope the 75 size to Utopia 2003 to 2004, while the 100 size is also sold as a Caldera Utopia part. Model name alone is not enough to order from; use the year or, better, the number printed on the cartridge you are replacing.
Are Caldera and Hot Spring filters the same?
Some parts overlap, because both brands sit under Watkins. One OEM cartridge is listed as fitting Hot Spring, Hot Spot, Solana and Caldera spas. That applies to specific part numbers and named models rather than to the brands generally, so verify against your own element.
What is the Unicel equivalent of a Caldera 50 filter?
Listings state C-7350 for the Caldera 50, alongside Pleatco PCD50N, Filbur FC-3963 and Caldera numbers 1019401 and 73532. The 75 maps to C-7375 and the 100 to C-8399.
How often should a Caldera filter be replaced?
Rinse every couple of weeks, soak chemically every few months, and replace when the pleats stay discolored after a soak or an end cap begins to separate. Condition beats calendar. Caldera cartridges are cheap enough that keeping a spare and rotating them is worthwhile.
